How To Install And Use Wine On Ubuntu
Okay so you’ve managed to download and install Ubuntu, and so far your enjoying it. It does pretty much everything you have come to expect from a mature operating system, and all the applications you need are already pre-loaded as part of the installation…Well, almost all the applications. After a couple of days you realise that some of your favourite apps you used on Windows aren’t available for Linux yet.
If that is the case then you have come to the right place.
In this article I’m going to show you the basics of installing and using an application called Wine, which is a Windows Emulator. Before you carry on with the rest of this article, it is important to understand that not all applications made for windows will execute properly if it all. Always check the compatibility pages on the wine home page to see if your specific application will work with Wine or not.
Part 1: Installing Wine.
Step 1:
Click the Applications menu on the panel at the top of your screen. Scroll down to Accessories and click on Terminal.
Step 2:
When the Terminal window opens type the following….
sudo apt-get install wine
You will be asked to enter your login password and then the installation process will begin. If you already have wine installed on your system the package manager will tell you, or ask you if you want to upgrade if there is a newer version available.
When the installation process finishes, leave the Terminal window open and move on to the next part of this article.
Part 2: Installing A Windows Application Using Wine
Within the Terminal window change to the directory where your applications executable file (.exe) is located and type the following:
wine myapp.exe
Remember to use the actual name of the .exe file rather than the example i used above. Once you have typed that in, wait a few moments and then follow the installation process. Once the installation process for that particular application has finished, it should automaticaly start up.
Now if you click on the Applications menu at the top of your screen you will notice a new menu called Wine. If you scroll down to it a sub menu will show. On that sub menu you will see a menu item called Programs. If you move your mouse pointer over that it will give you a list of the applications you have installed using wine and can simply click on each one to start it without the need to use the Terminal.
And there you have it, another quick and hopefully easy to read article. I hope you find it to be of some help and enjoyed reading it.
