According to Wikipedia.org: The United States Air Force is the aerospace branch of the United States armed forces and one of the seven uniformed services. Formerly part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. The USAF is the largest and most technologically advanced modern air force in the world, with over 9,000 aircraft in service and about 352,000 personnel on active duty, 72,000 in the Ready Reserve, 102,000 in the Air National Guard and 57,000 auxiliarists.

Radar-jam program restored for B-52s

The Air Force has restarted a program to arm B-52 bombers with long-range, radar-jamming pods two years after officials canceled the effort when cost estimates rose to $7 billion.

A new $68 million, five-year study is aimed at developing technology to load core component jammers onto the tips of B-52 wings.

It’s unclear when the pods — aimed at defeating air defenses, including early warning radars — could be deployed, but Jeff Weis, Boeing’s program manager for airborne electronic attack technology maturation, said it would be before 2020.
