SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A bill banning the importation of foreign nuclear waste into America is being blocked by a senator from Utah with ties to the importer, bill supporters say. The bill would stop a Salt Lake City company, EnergySolutions, from bringing in 20,000 tons of radioactive waste from Italy to Tennessee for processing and then burying 1,600 tons of material at a Utah site, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday. A man stuck upside-down in a cave for more than a day died early Thursday, despite the efforts of dozens of rescuers, authorities said. John Jones, 26, of Stansbury Park died about 12:30 a.m., nearly 28 hours after he became stuck 700 feet into the cave known as Nutty Putty, about 80 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would stop radioactive waste from being transported into the United States from foreign countries. The Salt Lake Tribune said the legislation passed Wednesday would oppose a plan by EnergySolutions to have 20,000 tons of low-level nuclear waste transported from Italy to Tennessee, where it would be processed. As part of the plan from the company based out of Salt Lake City, EnergySolutions would have 1,600 tons of the remaining radioactive waste transported to Tooele County, Utah, for burial.
