My first stop in the morning is Racialicious . This morning there was a post regarding an advertising campaign in Spain. In an effort to raise awareness, women who have been circumcised are depicted as toys. The post specifically questions the desire of Western feminists to impose their ideas of female emancipation upon others.  It is theorized that female circumcision is decried in the West, because it may reduce the ability of a woman to experience sexual fulfillment, whereas in cultures were it is practiced women experience a bond.  It is used as a right of passage, or a declaration of womanhood and community.   ... It has upset me for years that the US government routinely monkeys around with asylum for women who are either victims of genital mutilation or are facing genital mutilation if they return to their home countries. A lot of these women are Muslim or are from various African tribes that use the procedure as a form of control on a woman's sexuality. It's painful, unnecessary and can sometimes lead to infection or death. Via IRIN, the news comes from Yemen, " The Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood (SCMC), a government body, has drawn up a national action plan to end the practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Yemen. As a first step, the plan - the first of its kind in Yemen - aims to reduce FGM/C prevalence by 30 percent by 2012. The plan has yet to be presented to Cabinet for approval, but was discussed at a workshop on 24 June, with the 65 participants representing UN agencies, the government, donors and civil society. Former African Supermodel Waris Dirie who was an outspoken activist against female genital mutilation FGM is missing according to her manager and police. She is the author of the book Desert Flower and was due to speak at two women's rights conferences this week. Waris' disappearance comes a week after model and FGM activist Katoucha Niane's body was discovered floating in the Sienne river in Paris. Our hearts go out to Waris and her family with our hopeful prayers for her safe return.
