Veganism

Sometimes, it ain't easy being vegan. Particularly if you've moved to the South from California, where vegan-friendly restaurants are ubiquitous. Even more so if you spend your first Thanksgiving with your girlfriend's family. Who eat meat. And own a cattle ranch.  

The Facts: Vegans constitute between .2 and 1.3 percent of the U.S. population according to several national polls. The population is even larger on college campuses. The combined vegan and vegetarian population on college campuses is approximately 8 percent.  

Vegans are those who seek to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. According to CNN, about .2 percent of Americans are vegan. In order to maintain a healthy diet, vegans must consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that often form their staple foods. Fortunately, there are a number of places in Raleigh that offer vegan goods.  

I'm old enough to bring a dish to pass, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any good vegan substitutes or recipes? I say good because I've tried some very bad vegan food substitutes, and don't want to venture down that road again. ...  

Raiders Against Animal Cruelty is hosting "Veg Week," a weeklong celebration of vegetarian and vegan diets with events to get students aware of how they can improve their health and the environment.
