It borders the People's Republic of China to the north, Laos to the northwest and Cambodia to the southwest. To the country's east lies the South China Sea. With a population of approximately 84 million, Vietnam is one of the most densely populated nations in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam hosts its biggest-ever sporting event from Friday when thousands of regional athletes gather for the third Asian Indoor Games, and it has high hopes of putting on a successful show. Despite the challenge of finding sponsors during the global financial crisis, organisers said everything was in place for the opening ceremony at My Dinh National Stadium -- the only event taking place outdoors.
