Outgoing Virginia Governor Tim Kaine got a bit of a surprise during his radio show today, after "Barry from D.C." called to thank him for his years of service.
"Barry from D.C." was, however, President Obama.
"Governor Kaine, this is actually the President of the United States calling," Obama said.
"No," a nearly incredulous Kaine began. [...]

Departing Gov. Tim Kaine’s shoddy little trick last week adds another item to the General Assembly’s to-do list: Fix the state budget process. Kaine put together an in-your-face, tax-hiking budget knowing full well it would not meet with the approval of the General Assembly or the incoming governor, Bob McDonnell. McDonnell made it quite plain throughout his campaign that he was not going to entertain tax hikes. Yet Kaine has proposed an...

By Rosalind Helderman Gov. Tim Kaine (D) fielded calls for the last time on WTOP's "Ask the Governor" program this morning, including one with a familiar voice identified by host Mark Seagrave as "Barry from D.C." That would be President Obama, calling in to congratulate his pick for chairman of the Democratic National Committee as he concludes his four years as governor of Virginia. Another call came from Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell, during...

Governor-elect Bob McDonnell has just released a statement in which he terms Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s proposed tax increases “bad economic policy.“ “It is bad economic policy to increase taxes on Virginians, especially as they continue to struggle with the worst economy in generations,“ said McDonnell, a Republican who takes office Jan. 16.

Lame duck Virginia Governor Tim Kaine (D) leaves office in a few weeks, turning things over to Republican Bob McDonnell. This year's $37.8 billion budget is a slight increase from last year's $37.0 billion and up even from 2007's $35 billion budget, but Kaine argues that a tax increase is needed to keep up with proposals for spending growth.
(The Washington Post commends Kaine for "reducing budgets by $7 billion" but that seems to be a false...

When the rumors were first floated that Tim Kaine would be eliminating the state’s contribution to car tax relief, it struck me as an odd proposal to come from a Governor who had been a Mayor.
As an elected official in Richmond, Kaine regularly voiced his displeasure with state policies that disadvantaged localities.
I didn’t quite understand [...]

House Speaker William J. Howell, R-Stafford, today criticized Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s proposed increase in the state income tax and said it has no chance of passage. Howell said House Republicans will work with Governor-Elect Bob McDonnell to balance Virginia’s budget without tax increases. “As Virginia taxpayers, families and businesses are struggling with the difficult decisions brought about by the national economic recession, it is...

Talk about your chance encounter in the hallway. First, Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell (R) ran into House Speaker Bill Howell (R) in the state Capitol this afternoon. Then, a couple minutes later, McDonnell ran into Gov. Tim Kaine (D) just as the incoming governor was about to speak to 60 reporters and editors at the annual AP Day at the Capitol in Richmond. The two men, both accompanied by entourages, greeted each other warmly and shared a few...

Outgoing governor Tim Kaine threw a party last night for the hundreds of people who have helped him and worked with him over his 16 years in office. About 1,400 (no, that's not a typo) people turned out, including legislators, local elected officials, staffers, and friends he made as governor, lieutenant governor, Richmond mayor and city council member. Guests included former DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe; Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band...
