A community portal about Voice over IP with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP -based network.
The Advantages of the voIP
VoIP is a service where voice data is transferred over the Internet just like normal Internet data traffic. VoIP is also known as Internet Telephony or IP telephony. When the Internet connection is a broadband connection, VoIP is usually referred to as Broadband Telephony. Whatever be the terminology used, VoIP phone service is a way of offering speech communication utilizing the Internet infrastructure.
Voice over IP utilizes the present infrastructure which is already established for the Internet and speech signals changed to digital audio are broadcast in the form of packets. VoIP services can be interfaced with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and calls can be made to different computer, mobile phone VoIP phone or an standard telephone.
If you are wondering about the facilities which are provided by VoIP and you're afraid that they don't provide enough of them, you're wrong! VoIP provides call forwarding, call waiting, caller identification, automatic redial and conference call facilities. VoIP has an advantage over regular telephony in terms of security. The audio content is divided into many pieces of very short duration and transmitted over the Internet as packets. The bundles require not to be received at intermediate points in sequence. It is very difficult for anyone to stop a conversation being carried on VoIP.
It became very popular over the last few years and the VoIP has become a low-priced spoken communication solution with wide user acceptance and a huge consumer base. The best thing is that the service providers do not have to pay for the expenses of establishing infrastructure like cables etc. switching equipment as the Internet infrastructure is already in situ. In PSTN, the service provider is required to digitalize voice and transmit the data after conversion to digital signals. The Internet infrastructure already carries signals of this nature and this reduces the cost for service providers significantly. This extends VoIP telephone services to the customer at much more economical rates than PSTN.
Other benefit of VoIP service is that it makes your physical location immaterial. All you need is access to a computer to be able to call any number of your choice, even international numbers for the cost of a local call.
The VoIP has also disfavors and not only advantages. The biggest one is that internet traffic is unreliable in congested networks so, the risks of neglected packets are very high. In such situations, dropouts in conversation are inevitable. According to the PSTN, you won't have such problems because they are reliable when it comes yo communication.. For the similar causes, VoIP telephone services are incapable to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees provided by the PSTN.
