CANADA- group of artists opposed to the re-election of Saguenay Mayor Jean Tremblay is selling voodoo dolls bearing the politician's likeness in the hope that he will retire. Pierre Demers, a film teacher at Cégep de Jonquière and a long-time outspoken critic of Tremblay, said it's time for the mayor's 12-year reign to end. "Maybe it's time for him to retire," he said. Demers, who came up with the idea for the voodoo doll, which comes with its own pins, said the handmade doll portrays Tremblay with a crucifix at his hip because of the mayor's legal fight to continue reciting a prayer before ... For those folks who may be interested in the history of Voodoo dolls, you should check out my new book, Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual. In it, I trace the origins of the modern day Voodoo doll back to Africa and Greece, how they were used, how they got here to the US, and how they are supposed to be used, as opposed to how they are believed to be used. In 213 pages (who knew there was so much to know?) I discuss the various types of archetypal dolls that have had an influence on the modern day Voodoo doll, as well ... Read Full Story

I admit it, I have been touched by the spirit of the Jule nissen, the Scandinavian equivalent to Santa Claus (sort of...). In any event, I am having a Yuletide spectacular sale at the Mystic Voodoo where you have the chance to purchase one of these very cool Voodoo art dolls at half price or lower. I could call it my end of the year clearance sale, but Yuletide Spectacular sounds so much more exciting. The first guy up for sale is this Woodland Moss Faery guy. Moss faeries are believed to have originated in Switzerland and possibly Germany. Some are even known to ... Read Full Story

For_Immediate_Release: United States of America (Press Release) March 4, 2009 -- Mysterious and provocative, the foremost reigning icon of African derived religions in the minds of the Western world is the Voodoo doll. Images of ugly pin-sticking dolls used for hexing your neighbor and summoning evil spirits, satanic evil-doers engaging in bloody sacrifices, brain-eating zombies, rock music and drugs, sexual promiscuity and homosexuality, the occult, Voodoo, and demonism--they all go together in the minds of the general public, thanks to Hollywood and sensational novels. Very few things have the potential to create as much fear, panic, and paranoia as the discovery of a Voodoo ... Read Full Story

Some white guy at The Star says that a recent Snoop appearance at a KC casino signals hip-hop now moving toward "legacy" artists and away from so many one-hit wonders chasing trends . . . Somebody please tell this to Soulja Boy.

Voodoo Experience ‘09 annexed New Orleans’ City Park last weekend for three days of music and festival madness, and people partied hard. They rocked out to the interstellar grooves of the Flaming Lips, the ballsy arena rock of Kiss, the brash rhymes of Eminem, among many others. They rode around naked on bicycles. Yes, naked. [...]

There's a nifty piece from Michelle Gonzalez Maldonado over at Religion Dispatches. She relays the tale of a doll which was brought to her by some colleagues over in the Art History Department -- a computer had stopped working, and when it was moved from its cabinet, the doll was found tucked behind it. Naturally, this freaked out the Art History folks just a little bit, so they came to see Gonzales Maldonado. The doll itself is a simple one...
