Serena Williams, second seed, withdrew from the Los Angeles Classic with a knee injury on Tuesday. “After hitting this morning, I knew that I wasn’t going to be ready for this week,” Williams said. The world number five had been in doubt for the tournament since withdrawing from the semi-finals of the Stanford Classic with an injury to her left knee. Dinara Safin, 7th seed, keeps adding wins to her record, after winning the title in Los Angeles she opened play in Montreal with a 2 set win over Anastasia Rodionova. Patty Schnyder, 9th seed, defeated Monica Niculesco while Marion Bartoli, 10 th seed, enjoy a free pass to the next round after Alisa Kleybanova withdrew with a back injury.
