Learn about Egyptian political activist and community supporter, Wael Abbas.
Wael Abbas blogs at Misr Digital (Egyptian Awareness). He reported on harassment of women, and broadcast a video of police brutality in Egypt.
His blog reporting lead to the conviction of police for torture. However, his accounts with YouTube and Yahoo were both closed because of pressure from the Egyptian government. YouTube has since restored his account and most of his videos.
Egypt cracking down on Wael Abbas
"The rule of thumb is that (governments) crack down on bloggers and internet journalists when they become influential," said Marc Lynch, a George Washington University political scientist who tracks the Arab world on his own blog, http://www.abuaardvark.com.
Seems that goverment pressure is starting to have some effect since Wael Abbas' accounts got shut down at Yahoo and YouTube. Luckily, YouTube reinstated his account and most of his videos after getting complaints from Misr Digital supporters.
