I've been writing this blog for over 1 year and have finally come to realize something. Most of my readers are waiters. WTF! Where are all the banquet managers? Don't get me wrong, I sincerely appreciate all of you fellow road warrior waiters. Without all of you I wouldn't have a job. People think that it's easy to be a waiter but just let them try it for 1 month. They'll be running for the hills quicker than a long-tailed cat in a room full o' rocking chairs. But where the hell are all the banquet managers? I guess they're too friggin busy, or ... Read Full Story

November was a great month for this blog. I had great response for "guest blogger" month with 5 fantastic posts: One from a sales manager , one from an ex- chef , one from a waiter , one from a fellow ban quet manager , one from a waitress, and the last from a bartender . I hope you enjoyed their stories and will become frequent readers of their blogs. But there was one bad thing about November; it's the poll I ran: " Which is the better waiter "? The poll results are: Banquet Waiters 7% Restaurant Waiters 75% Neither, the busser does ... Read Full Story

A few weeks ago Linda and I went out to dinner at a fairly nice restaurant. It wasn’t a five-star restaurant, but you could expect to pay $25-$30 per meal. We like to go out to eat, but in an effort to minimize our expenses , it is more of a special occasion when we dine out. Once we were seated we started looking at the menus, enjoying the nice atmosphere and were chatting about what looked good to us. Our waiter quickly ran up, introduced himself, and told us about the wine specials they were having that night offered us a glass. Linda ... Read Full Story

"Do me a favor, fax this for me". Then a half hour later, "Call the florist and order 4 centerpieces for the restaurant". Or, "Call the front desk for me and make a reservation for so-n-so for 2 nights". WTF !!! I'm not your secretary, I'm the Banquet Manager dammit! I have enough on my plate with all these groups in house - don't give me your shit and expect me to smile about it. I got my own crap to do. The boss is making me nuts lately... Does this shit happen to you? Related Stories: He's The GM, Why Does He Always ... Read Full Story

When you go to the Tam O'Shanter Inn, Five Crowns or Lawry's, there should be a good mix of men and women servers. After a gender discrimination complaint was filed in 2003, Lawry's stopped a policy dating back to 1938 in which women were the preferred gender to hire. Despite the change in policy, the case went forward to federal court. The Pasadena-based company will pay out more than $1 million, half of which that will go to men who...
