U.S. space pioneer Wally Schirra helped lead the United States into the space age as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. He died in 2007 at the age of 84.

Photo by: Will Parson Veterans Day came early this year at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial, where a ceremony on Saturday honored the late astronaut Wally Schirra. Mount Soledad Memorial Association Chairman unveiled the plaque. Sinh Tho Nguyen, a 40-year-old veteran of the Army National Guard, who was in San Diego completing a 2,500-mile walk across the country to honor America and those who serve, was a guest of honor.
