New Delhi: Former union law minister Ram Jethmalani on Saturday kicked up a row at an international conference on terrorism, asking if Islam's jehadi doctrine does not virtually render 'god a brothel keeper', prompting a Saudi Arabian envoy to walk out of the conference. Addressing the seminar, Jethmalani wondered if the jehadi doctrine, propagating the belief allegedly held by Islam's Wahab sect that Muslims attaining martyrdom while fighting non-Muslims "get a place in heaven and the company of the opposite sex there", does not amount to saying that "god is a brothel keeper". The self-confessed maverick legal hawk also ... Read Full Story

US commanders have authority to discipline soldiers promoting Islamist extremism even though military regulations do not mention "jihadist" militancy, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday. This month's shooting rampage at Fort Hood has raised questions about how the military can identify potential Muslim extremists in its ranks as the suspected gunman, Major Nidal Hasan, had exchanged emails with a radical Yemeni cleric. Defense Department rules prohibit service members from supporting white "supremacist" causes or groups that back religious discrimination and broadly ban a soldier advocating "the use of force or violence," according to a 1996 directive. The regulations would clearly prohibit a soldier from ... Read Full Story

Faced with an escalating insurgency, Pakistan increasingly views U.S. efforts to stabilize neighboring Afghanistan as critical to its own security — but is worried enough about the chances of American failure that it continues to hedge its bets. The U.S. sent national security adviser Gen. James L. Jones to Pakistan last week to make that point as the Obama administration nears the end of a months long debate over military proposals to send ... Read Full Story
