Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk have taken the NHL by storm over the last month. Both Russian snipers have soared up the list of NHL scoring leaders and are determined to make the Richard Trophy competition a two-horse race. So, how does this domination of scoring compare to seasons past?

After a week that featured an unbelievable 4-goal performance and a 2-goal game that included an overtime winner, Ovechkin has taken the league lead in goals and points. He is currently on pace for 69 goals and 40 assists on the season. Even more amazing is Ovechkin’s production under new coach Bruce Boudreau, who took over after Glen Hanlon was fired on Thanksgiving day (ouch!). In 34 games under Boudreau, Ovechkin has accounted for 32 goals and 17 assists, which projects to 77 goals and 41 assists (118 points) over an 82-game season. Kovalchuk was recently sidelined thanks to a questionable knee-to-knee hit by Jarkko Ruttu, but returned to the lineup Tuesday night against Philadelphia. Kovalchuk is projected to score 58 goals and 40 assists. Let’s put these projections in perspective:
