A few months back I mentioned in a column that I think SatNav is a useless toy in a car, but I'm beginning to doubt that now. If anyone needs SatNav, it's anyone living in Washington DC and its environs. For a start, there's the traffic. Washington DC is, according to which survey you read, either the fourth or fifth most congested city in the United States, although anyone sitting in DC traffic will argue that it's undoubtedly the first. Interstate 495, also known as the Capitol Beltway... Read Full Story

Tonight I ate dinner at Hank's Oyster Bar, a Dupont Circle restaurant I've been dying to try. If I had to choose my last meal, oysters on the half shell would absolutely have a place on my table. There's nothing better than a plump, salty oyster with a healthy dab of cocktail sauce and a squirt of lemon. Add a dollop of horseradish, and it's heaven. The restaurant has a warm and casual atmosphere, perfect for a good meal after a long day at the office. The space is fairly small, but it... Read Full Story

Washingtonians take fitness seriously - all you have to do is wander through Rock Creek Park or on the National Mall to see how many walkers, joggers, cyclists and sunbathers use the city’s open spaces as their workout locations. Last week, Eric Morris wrote on the New York Times Freakonomics Blog about what he called the " Danger of Safety . " Referring to the recent crash on the D.C. Metro that killed 9 people, he wrote: The relative rarity of air and rail disasters makes them novel, and hence news. Car crashes bite man, and rail and air crashes bite dog. Intensive coverage of the few air and rail accidents that do occur in turn promotes the widespread — and erroneous — inference that planes and trains are unsafe... Read Full Story
A Metro commuter train smashed into the rear of another at the height of the capital's Monday evening rush hour, killing at least nine people and injuring scores as the front end of the trailing train jackknifed into the air and fell atop the first. Cars of both trains were ripped open and smashed together in the worst accident in Metrorail's 33-year history. District of Columbia fire spokesman Alan Etter said crews had to cut some people out of what he described as a "mass casualty event... Read Full Story
Yesterday, two stories hit the news that caught the Quarterback's attention. Unless you live in Southeast Michigan (and for many of you, even if you live in Southeast Michigan) you probably only heard about one. The first story came in the morning. A worker constructing the new C.S.Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan Medical Center was killed by falling debris . The second story you've undoubtedly heard. Two cars on the Washington, D.C. Metro collided at the Maryland... Read Full Story
