What happening? 

Monday night surprise factor. Cleveland has played eight straight early Sunday games, with abysmal results. The Browns are going nowhere, which is exactly where they were headed last year when they pulled one shining moment out of a 4-12 season. It was a Monday night game against the Giants, who at the time were undefeated on the heels of a Super Bowl season. The Browns, in turn, were 1-3, which became the pace they maintained throughout the 2008 season. Somehow, under the bright lights against a team out of their league, they not only won. They dominated, racking up season highs in yards and points in a 35-14 win. Something about Mondays wakes up the ghosts of past Cleveland glories. The Browns are 15-13 on Monday nights. They won the first Monday night game ever played, 31-21 over the Jets on Sept. 21, 1970. There might even be some Monday night karma for Brady Quinn, who has been reinstated as the starter. Quinn's only win as an NFL starter came on a Monday night, last Nov. 17, at Buffalo. The Browns are 1-13 since then. On the off chance there's such a thing as Monday night karma, they are in no position to disbelieve. 

Saving a season vs. saving a regime. The Ravens have lost three of their last four, but it's not as if they have staggered to a 4-4 record. Their losses, all close, were to Cincinnati (twice), New England and Minnesota, teams with a combined 19-5 record. They are just two Sundays removed from destroying then-unbeaten Denver, 30-7. They have proven their mettle on the road against a far better opponent than the Browns, beating San Diego 31-26. Yet, a slip-up on Monday would be disastrous, because it would put them three games in arrears of both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in the AFC North. Even a win merely keeps them hanging on, heading into a gauntlet of games against Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Green Bay. Clearly, Browns head coach Eric Mangini is highly motivated to win because he needs to give owner Randy Lerner something to believe in. It's not nearly as clear how motivated the players are to prop up the Mangini regime, as opposed to simply playing for themselves and their careers. If the Browns make a game of it, it will be a sign the players are willing to go to the wall for Mangini. If the Browns lay another egg, it will be a sign Mangini is likely to follow general manager George Kokinis out the door.

What happening? 

Baltimore always gets Cleveland's dander up. For the first time in the Browns-Ravens series, Baltimore comes to town without any of the players who were with the 1995 Browns, the team that moved to Baltimore in 1996. Placekicker Matt Stover had been the last man standing. Still, Browns fans will never forget that their team was hijacked by Art Modell, and the series will always having meaning for them. Many have always resented Ray Lewis ascent to icon status, noting that he was a first-round pick the first year the Browns-turned-Ravens were in Baltimore. There is a fresh reminder of the turmoil that was. Eric Mangini, now the Browns head coach, was a neophyte assistant with Cleveland in 1995 and then worked in Baltimore in 1996. Despite awful overall results in the expansion era, Cleveland has given Baltimore trouble, going 7-9 in the series since 2001. In 2001, when the Ravens were defending Super Bowl champions, the Browns beat Baltimore twice. There's always a buzz in the stands when Baltimore comes in. If fans organizing a protest against the Browns' ineptitude get their way, the stands will be empty early on. The protest asks for fans to stay out of their seats until after kickoff.

What happening? 

 

Strange things have been pulled out of thin air by other lost teams in other Monday night games. Cleveland staying in this game would be strange to say the least. Baltimore is in a 1-4 skid, but the Ravens have been in every game against a series of playoff-style teams, and they blew away then-unbeaten Denver recently. 

The Browns' only win was more than a month ago in one of the ugliest games imaginable, at Buffalo. Since then, the Browns have been pummeled in net offense 449-197 by Pittsburgh, 460-139 by Green Bay and 369-191 by Chicago. The Ravens know the name of that tune. They demolished the Browns 479 yards to 186 in a 34-3 rout of Cleveland on Sept. 27 at Baltimore. In that game, Brady Quinn started and was intercepted on his first series. After Quinn was benched at halftime, Derek Anderson was picked off three times. Nothing about what happened in that game or in the ones that followed inspired any belief the Browns can hang with any strong team. 

It's a strange year for the Ravens, whose offense is higher in the league rankings than its vaunted defense. Even though Baltimore's defense has sprouted a few leaks, the Ravens still make you pass on them to beat them. The Browns haven't had a clue as to milking an air game out of a young receiving corps. Baltimore's offense, on the other hand, unleashed weapons at every turn in dismantling Cleveland's defense in September, with veteran wideout Derrick Mason looking young again on a 72-yard TD catch.
