Web runs out of space by 2010: Experts

LONDON: A survey, conducted by the European Commission, found that few companies are prepared for the switch from the current naming protocol, IPv4, to the new regime, IPv6. Web experts have warned that we could run out of internet addresses within the next two years unless more companies migrate to the new platform. The IPv4 and IPv6 protocols refer to the way in which web addresses are created and assigned. Each website has a unique IP address, represented by a string of numbers, such as... Read Full Story

"Here comes another bubble"

We have our friends at Web Worker Daily to thank for this one as well. At the risk of turning into EndlessKnotsTube, here's another video set to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" and performed by The Richter Scales , "Men Who Sing." Is there a new technology bubble? Apropos of my story, Endless Knots , wherein a knitter starts a dot-com in the last bubble, kick back and click. Even has "babies blogging in the womb" and predicts that techno weirdos like myself will blog the video. Choke... Read Full Story

"If you died, would your online friends know?"

Here's a thought-provoking, if not a bit chilling, article, If you died, would your online friends know? , from Esther Schindler, who writes for, among other places, CIO magazine (Nov 14, 2007, issue). Her friend died and she didn't find out until nearly a year later. Why? Because nowadays few of us keep a hardcopy address book anymore and in our paranoia most don't even allow anyone else to have the password to our computers. Think about this: For the last 25 years, I have lived in TCP/IP... Read Full Story

"Mixed reality" for virtual teams

Techie alert: Sun has announced something very interesting in the virtual reality space. Non-techie alert: A computer company has come up with a truly innovative way for people to meet online. Our friends at Leading Virtually , the new blog out of SUNY Binghamton, are directing us to a great little movie from Sun that shows their new collaborative work environment called MPK20 . Apart from the name reminding us of 3PKO, THIS IS REALLY COOL! As Rebecca Jestice points out on her post... Read Full Story

(One of) the sexiest men in IT

I don't have a category for this one but since it involves a friend, "friends" will have to do. Nova Spivack , our friend, seriously, has been named "one of the sexiest men in IT," according to Margaret Rouse of IT Knowledge Exchange . Look at who else in on the list: Gordon Moore, former chair and CEO of Intel; Tim Berners-Lee, granddaddy (though he's hardly old enough) of the web; and Larry Page, co-founder of Google. Another post will have to consider the criteria by which a man... Read Full Story
