The James Webb Space Telescope is a planned space infrared observatory, intended to ultimately replace the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency are all working on the Webb telescope project. The telescope is named after NASA's second administrator, James E. Webb.

Unfortunately the telescope won't be launched into orbit until at the soonest 2013.

The Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) is a space telescope that was carried into orbit by the Space Shuttle Discovery in April 1990. It is named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble. Although not the first space telescope, the Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well-known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, and is one of NASA's Great Observatories, along with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Space telescopes were proposed ... Read Full Story

A revolutionary space telescope designed to peek into the remnants of the "Big Bang" that created the Universe has got off to a fine start, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Thursday. The Planck microwave observatory began scanning the skies on August 13 after a three-month period to commission its two instruments, the agency said in a press release. "Both instruments have demonstrated excellent characteristics so far, fulfilling expectations from ground tests," it said. Planck's first task was to conduct a two-week trial, the "First Light Survey," in which it made a map comprising strips of the sky in all of the energy ... Read Full Story

Enjoy these spectacular space galaxy photos by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space telescope. This object is a billowing tower of cold gas and dust rising from a stellar nursery called the Eagle Nebula . 7,000 light-years distant from us, the soaring tower is 9.5 light-years or about 90 trillion kilometers tall. Stars in the Eagle Nebula are born in clouds of cold hydrogen gas that reside in chaotic neighbourhoods, where energy from young stars sculpts fantasy-like landscapes in the gas. The tower may be a giant incubator for those newborn stars. The column is silhouetted against the background glow of more distant gas. The bumps ... Read Full Story

US astronauts took off Monday at the start of a high-risk mission to service, for the last time, the Hubble telescope, which has revolutionized humankind's understanding of the universe. The seven astronauts, clad in their orange launch and re-entry suits, boarded the space shuttle Atlantis for the 2:01 pm (1801 GMT) liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Flight director Mike Leinbach gave the team the go-ahead for takeoff saying: "It's a great day to go to fly," adding he wished the crew "a great mission, good luck and Godspeed and see you back in 11 days." The mission aims to ... Read Full Story

The US space agency said it was on target to launch Monday the space shuttle Atlantis on its high-risk final mission to service the Hubble telescope. "Atlantis is ready to fly," said NASA test director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, adding that the countdown to launch was proceeding on schedule, with liftoff expected Monday at 2:01 pm (1801 GMT). Weather forecasters said there was a 90 percent chance of favorable conditions for the launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The 11-day shuttle mission aims to provide the fifth and last maintenance operation to the Hubble before the shuttle fleet is retired, and if successful ... Read Full Story
