'Vision', a Plea to Save the James Webb Space Telescope

By bradgoodspeed on  From bradblogspeed.com
The United States Congress wants to cancel Hubble's successor. A very short film about why they shouldn't.   NOTE: Scroll down to skip directly to the video. If you enjoy it, please come back to learn more. In a recent chat with Callum Sutherland of Milky Way Musings , he told me about the  Save the  James Webb Space Telescope  video contest. Callum had released a short sample of his submission, at the time still in production, and suggested I put one together as well. The contest seeks...Read Full Story

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope: A Year Of Achievement And Success - with video

By kevinmontana on  From messagetoeagle.com
MessageToEagle.com - The James Webb Space Telescope marked a year of significant progress in 2011 as it continues to come together as NASA's next generation space telescope. The year brought forth a pathfinder backplane to support the large primary mirror structure, mirror cryotesting, creation of mirror support structures, several successful sunshield layer tests and the creation of an assembly station within NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's cleanroom.Read Full Story

NASA budget plan saves telescope, cuts space taxis

 From reuters.com
HOUSTON ( Reuters ) - A compromise spending plan for NASA preserves the over-budget replacement for the Hubble Space Telescope and halves President Barack Obama 's request for money to spur development of commercial space taxis, officials said on Tuesday. Overall, the U.S. space agency would receive $17.8 billion for the fiscal year that began October 1 - $924 million less than the White House requested and $684 million less than it received this year. The compromise, approved by a House and...Read Full Story

As expected, NASA’s budget axes a partnership with the European Space Agency that was to send two robotic probes to Mars later this decade. With the agency’s budget declining 0.3 percent to $17.7 billion, the Mars program lost out to the massively over-budget James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope. The Webb will continue toward a 2018 launch. Read full article >>

Greenbelt, MD - Most spiral galaxies in the Universe have a bar structure in their centre, and Hubble’s image of NGC 1073 offers a particularly clear view of one of these. Galaxies’ star-filled bars are thought to emerge as gravitational density waves funnel gas toward the galactic centre, supplying the material to create new stars. [...]

Greenbelt, MD - Thanks to the presence of a natural "zoom lens" in space, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope got a uniquely close-up look at the brightest "magnified" galaxy yet discovered. This observation provides a unique opportunity to study the physical properties of a galaxy vigorously forming stars when the universe was only one-third its present [...]

(PhysOrg.com) -- A team led by UCLA research astronomer Michael Rich has used a unique telescope to discover a previously unknown companion to the nearby galaxy NGC 4449, which is some 12.5 million light years from Earth. The newly discovered dwarf galaxy had escaped even the prying eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The Hubble Space Telescope’s userers at the European Space Agency, which is a junior partner to NASA on the telescopes management, released today a stunning image of a galaxy called NGC 1073. If Milky Way specialists are right, it looks a lot like the one in which the Sun and its planets circulate. The distant galaxy is hardly new to science, having been discovered by German-English telescope wizrd William Herschel in 1785. To the left and...
