Flower Girl Dresses: Tips for Coordinating Styles

While all eyes are on the bride on the big day, flower girls create an adorable, lasting impression for your wedding guests. These little show stoppers are typically between three and eight years old, and strew a trail of flower petals down the aisle before the bride makes her grand entrance. The ideal flower girl dress is youthful and charming, but also ties in elements of the bridal gown or bridesmaids’ dresses. Here are some helpful tips for coordinating flower girl dresses .

Coordinating Flower Girl Dresses with a Themed Wedding

If you’re having a themed wedding, consider the style, color selection and general motif of your wedding before heading out to buy the flower girl dress. Is your wedding formal and traditional, or modern and fresh? Either way, you can use your theme as inspiration for your flower girl dress. Your wedding colors can also provide great ideas for flower girl dresses. Your options for tying in these colors are limitless. Use a bold sash, delicate colored lace or scalloping, or other details to reflect your wedding theme and colors.

Next, you’ll need to decide if the flower girl should coordinate with the bridesmaids or the bride.

Coordinating with the Bridal Gown

Mini bridal styles are very popular choices for flower girls. Most often, the flower girls dress in a style that mimics the bridal gown in style and color. Of course, you’ll need to be sure that the flower girl’s dress is age appropriate. If your wedding dress is strapless, it may not be appropriate for a young girl to wear. However, finding a gown with spaghetti straps is a suitable alternative, and you can even add a sheer jacket to make the outfit more age appropriate. You can add some accessories to your flower girl as well, such as a veil.

Coordinating with the Bridesmaids

Another great choice is to have the flower girl’s dress coordinate with the bridesmaids’ dresses. This choice can make the entrance of the wedding party all the more dramatic. Bear in mind that just because you’ve chosen to coordinate the flower girl with the bridesmaids doesn’t mean that the flower girl has to wear a small version of the same dress.

The flower girl’s dress could be the same style as the bridal gown but in the same color as the bridesmaids’ dresses. Or, the dress could be in the style of the bridesmaids’ dresses, and in the same color scheme as the bridal gown.

Once again, it’s important to remember the age of your flower girl and to keep the dress you’ve chosen appropriate and modest. Wider spaghetti straps will be more appropriate, but won’t sacrifice the elegance of the dress. You can also add puffy sleeves to a flower girl dress to make it more age appropriate.

Other Flower Girl Dress Options

You may not want to coordinate your flower girl’s dress to any of the other dresses in your bridal party. Perhaps you’ve found an adorable dress that is perfect your flower girl. Even if the dress is completely different from the dresses in your bridal party, you can st

ill coordinate it with accessories. Sashes, veils and jewelry can help to coordinate your flower girl’s dress with the rest of the bridal party. This is a simple way to pull together colors, textures and themes for a picture perfect bridal party.

Coordinating Multiple Flower Girl Dresses

If you have multiple flower girls, you may want to consider playing with color a

nd cut. Identical, cookie cutter flower girls can be cute, but why not use a bit more creativity? One great way to coordinate multiple dresses is to alternate the colors. For example, one dress could be white with a pink sash, while the other could be pink with a white sash.

Veils and jewelry are other great ways to coordinate different flower girl dresses. You can also choose to pull colors from the bridal bouquet for the flower girl dresses, or colors from the flower petals they’ll be tossing down the aisle.

Remember that you’ll want to choose fabrics and cuts that your flower girl can move easily in. It’s generally advised to avoid long, flowing dresses, scratchy fabrics or anything that limits movement. The more comfortable your flower girl is, the better she’ll look in her dress.

Have some fun with the flower girl dresses. While it’s important to keep modesty and age appropriateness in mind, you can have lots of creative fun with the color, style and accessories for your flower girl dresses.

By keeping these simple tips in mind, your flower girl or flower girls will look just as special as you do on the big day.
