History was made tonight as the United States elected the first black president by voting Barack Obama into office.

Television networks began calling the election for Obama at approximately 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT). A large throng of supporters celebrated the Obama victory in Chicago and around the country as it became increasingly obvious that John McCain had no path to victory.

Barack Obama will take over the office of president Jan. 20, 2009.
