The medical establishment has long controlled the discourse on how society views disabilities in terms of treatment, coping mechanism, and understanding. By exploring how self advocates and parent advocates have entered the discussion in terms of autism we can better understand how viewing disability from multiple lenses ultimately leads to more fully understanding of disability, its causes, its treatments, and its place in a functional society.
The Autism Consortium, an innovative collaboration of researchers, clinicians, funders and families dedicated to catalyzing research and enhancing clinical care for autism spectrum disorders, held its fourth annual symposium on Oct. 28, 2009, at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
