A community portal about Wi-Fi with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Wi-Fi is a brand originally licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance ® to describe the underlying technology of wireless local area networks based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications. It was developed to be used for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, in LANs, but is now increasingly used for more services, including Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and basic connectivity of consumer electronics such as televisions and DVD players, or digital cameras. More standards are in development that will allow Wi-Fi to be used by cars in highways in support of an Intelligent Transportation System to increase safety, gather statistics, and enable mobile commerce. Wi-Fi ® and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ™ logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance ® - the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.
Qwest Offers Free Wi-Fi to Broadband Subs
Qwest announced today that Qwest broadband subscribers now have access to free Wi-Fi service. Qwest Wi-Fi will be using AT&T’s Wi-Fi network for the offering, providing access to 17,000 hot spots across the U.S. for Qwest broadband subscribers. “Mobility is important to our customers, as is value,” said Dan Yost, executive vice president for Qwest’s Mass Markets Organization in a company statement. “With free Wi-Fi, our high-speed Internet customers can extend the benefits of their Qwest broadband experience to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network, powered by AT&T Wi-Fi.”
The move is not surprising. AT&T offers a similar benefit to its broadband base and recent reports have Verizon on the verge of doing the same. With cable competitors on the verge of offering WiMAX service and a few already offering free Wi-Fi, telecom broadband providers are almost compelled to offer free Wi-Fi service. It is quickly becoming a standard for any viable broadband product offering.
