A community portal about Wi-Fi with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Wi-Fi is a brand originally licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance ® to describe the underlying technology of wireless local area networks based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications. It was developed to be used for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, in LANs, but is now increasingly used for more services, including Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and basic connectivity of consumer electronics such as televisions and DVD players, or digital cameras. More standards are in development that will allow Wi-Fi to be used by cars in highways in support of an Intelligent Transportation System to increase safety, gather statistics, and enable mobile commerce. Wi-Fi ® and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ™ logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance ® - the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.
So, with the growth of FON and Whisher , not to mention more informal sharing between neighbors, the question arises: is this legally acceptable from the perspective of the broadband subscriber? ( Note: please do not rely on this for legal advice. I am a law student, not a lawyer, and certainly not your lawyer. ) In a broad sense, at least traditionally, there is no problem, as in general it's perfectly acceptable to share one's own property (and a subscription is a sort of property) with... The Independent: Danger on the airwaves: Is the Wi-Fi revolution a health time bomb? Excerpt: "So far only a few, faint warnings have been raised, mainly by people who are so sensitised to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobiles, their masts and Wi-Fi that they become ill in its presence. The World Health Organisation estimates that up to three out of every hundred people are "electrosensitive" to some extent. But scientists and doctors - and some European governments - are adding... Earthlink is working on a Muni-WiFi project in Philadelphia. Recently Earthlink has said that they are looking at their business model (Muni-WiFi projects are not really working out) as they are having very few subscribers sign up for the service. They stated they would stick with the large cities and possibly slow down those projects. Philadelphia has some problems with crime, so a couple of years ago, the citizens voted to allow the city to install surveillance monitoring cameras throughout... Read Full Story
The latest sibling of the Wi-Fi standards 802.11n is expected to be fully delivered by end of 2008. With over-the air (OTA) estimates up to 200+ Mbps and Media Access Control Layer, Service Access Point (MAC SAP) Estimates up to 100 Mbps it should be fully capable of serving the Enterprise requirements.802.11n uses technology like multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), smart antenna technique for transmitting multiple data streams through multiple antennas and advance signal processing to... One of the main reasons that most people are afraid to try Linux is because they have this preconceived notion about linux being too hard to use and difficult to maintain; or that they have to do something drastically differ ant and there is a steep learning curve to using linux. After reading most of the comment on this post of mine and other popular forums for new linux users, it only solidified my belief that most non-linux users are very ignorant about linux. So here is an attemp to... Read Full Story
The UK’s head of the government’s committee on mobile safety research announced that children using WiFi networks should be monitored. He states that children should keep a safe distance from the embedded antennas and should not place wireless devices in their laps. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6602561.stm Prof Challis added that children are much more sensitive than adults to dangers such as pollutants like lead and UV radiation. "Since we advise that children should be discouraged from... Read Full Story
