According to Wikipedia.org: Wi-Fi is a brand originally licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance ® to describe the underlying technology of wireless local area networks based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications. It was developed to be used for mobile computing devices, such as laptops, in LANs, but is now increasingly used for more services, including Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and basic connectivity of consumer electronics such as televisions and DVD players, or digital cameras. More standards are in development that will allow Wi-Fi to be used by cars in highways in support of an Intelligent Transportation System to increase safety, gather statistics, and enable mobile commerce. Wi-Fi ® and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ™ logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance ® - the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.

This may be one of the best free apps that is available on the iPhone. We have all been in strange cities and have had to hunt down wifi spots in order to send out a quick email or send off a report.

Peer to peer connections between peripheral devices such as digital cameras, notebooks, printers and keyboards will get a lot easier due to a new specification announced by the Wi-Fi Alliance that will eliminate the need for a traditional Wi-Fi hotspot.
The new specification, known as Wi-Fi Direct, is set to go in effect in mid-2010 and will have data transfer speeds and range comparable to that currently observed with Wi-Fi networks.

Mobile media company JiWire and satellite broadband provider Row 44 are teaming up to deliver an in-flight Wi-Fi system that will come to you for free via advertising support.
