According to Wikipedia.org: WiMAX is defined as W orldwide I nteroperability for M icrowave Acc ess by the WiMAX Forum, formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the IEEE 802.16 standard, officially known as WirelessMAN. The Forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL".

Santa Clara, California-based Intel, the world's leading vendor of computer processors, is said to be planning the release of a new, wireless chipset that will enable future laptops to support three versions of WiMAX, namely that of 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz. According to a recent report, the company plans to launch the new, wireless solution with its upcoming Calpella and Arrandale notebook platforms, which are currently scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2010. Clearwire Corp. said Tuesday it named telecoms equipment providers Alvarion Ltd. of Israel and ZTE Corp. of China as network infrastructure suppliers to support its launch of 4G WiMAX service in Spain next year. Clearwire plans to sell its 4G WiMAX services under the CLEAR brand. The company says its 4G WiMAX service delivers broadband Internet connectivity similar to Wi-Fi, but with a service area reaching several miles. Alvarion will support the launch in Malaga, while ZTE will support the launch in Seville.
