Every day for the past couple of weeks a number of people have arrived at this blog after searching for information on Doug Seus, trainer of grizzly bears Bart the Bear, Little Bart, Honey Bump, and Tank. Evidently many people have been concerned that Doug was the trainer accidentally killed while working with one of the grizzlies. Doug is alive and well and so are Little Bart, Honey Bump, and Tank. Sadly, animal trainer Stephen Miller of Big Bear Lake, California died from an accidental bite on his neck by Rocky, a trained grizzly bear who has appeared in numerous movies. I mentioned here a couple weeks ago that a marauding bear had been spotted near where I live. Seeing bears around here, especially spring through autumn, is not that unusual. What was different about this bear was that it seemed to have lost its fear of humans, a “normal” part of a black bear’s temperament. They typically avoid interacting with humans, and are usually quite easy to scare off if necessary, requiring extra caution usually only when dealing with a mother and her cubs. All day long I've been trying to write a blog about the brutal, barbaric, horrific, and disgusting seal "hunt" taking place in Canada right now. As my eyes well up with tears and my stomach turns, I realize I have no words to adequately express my feelings. The actions of the humans grossly killing the baby seals and the actions of the people within the government of Canada who make the decision to continue to allow this gawd awful event are equal in nature. And both carry no honor, no excuse, and absolutely no justification. The brutal killing of defenseless baby seals is no ... Read Full Story

A fascinating story today, about the resilience of the rare pygmy hippo. I'd been hoping it would pop up on a Liberian news site, but it hasn't yet, so here is the Sky News version (click on the post title above to go to the article, as usual). A team of scientists led by the Zoological Society of London recently went to Liberia's Sapo National Park to track the rare and endangered pygmy hippo. There are thought to be only 3000 pygmy hippos left in the wild, across Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast, so the scientists thought they had their work cut ... Read Full Story
