A community portal about Wind power with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into more useful forms, usually electricity using wind turbines. In 2005, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 58,982 megawatts ; although it currently produces less than 1% of world-wide electricity use, it accounts for 23% of electricity use in Denmark, 6% in Germany and approximately 8% in Spain. Globally, wind power generation more than quadrupled between 1999 and 2005.

Antarctica’s the coldest, driest continent on the planet, and it’s also the windiest. Couple that with the fact that the summer months bring round-the-clock sunshine, and you’ve got an ideal spot for taking advantage of wind and solar power. That’s just what a number of Antarctic research stations do: put up solar panels or wind turbines to generate much-needed energy for living quarters, cooking and scientific equipment. Early experiments Sir Douglas Mawson, namesake for Australia’s Mawson Station, first realised Antarctica’s wind-energy potential in the early 1900s. The Aussies later tested a wind turbine (at right, photo courtesy of the Australian Antarctic Data Centre) when ... Read Full Story

Massachusetts has released the final version of a landmark ocean-management plan, creating a vast regulatory map for the state's coastal waters and setting new limits for offshore wind farms. The plan allows up to 266 wind turbines in state waters — 166 in two designated commercial wind farm areas and 100 more turbines scattered up and down the coast in smaller "community" projects — as the state tries to ramp up its renewable energy output. Authorized by the state's Oceans Act of 2008, the plan is designed to regulate development in state-controlled waters, which extend three miles offshore. It creates protected areas and prohibits ... Legislation that could bring more wind turbines and solar power projects to Indiana has a good chance of passing in the upcoming legislative session after failing in the last session's closing hours, two state lawmakers say. While the General Assembly seems unlikely to require Indiana utilities to generate a specific amount of electricity from renewable energy sources, it may expand the state's so-called net-metering policy. That rule allows some customers of investor-owned utilities to send excess electricity produced by wind turbines, solar panels and other renewable sources back into the electric grid and to be charged only for the net amount of power they ... North Dakota regulators say the state's wind power resources almost doubled in 2009. Four major projects began operating. They're capable of generating about 547 megawatts. North Dakota Public Service Commissioners Tony Clark and Kevin Cramer say the state's wind power capacity is now almost 1,200 megawatts. Clark says at the start of the decade, North Dakota had almost no commercial wind power, even though it is considered a top state for wind energy. Two new projects began operating this week. Basin Electric Power Cooperative has finished a 120-megawatt wind farm south of Minot. Iberdrola Renewables began operating a 149-megawatt development in Pierce County, north ... Read Full Story

Rhode Island has selected Chevron Energy Solutions to develop and maintain several wind turbines in the coastal town of Narragansett. Chevron beat out three other firms seeking the project and is not seeking any money from the state or the town for its proposal. The exact number and location of the turbines have not been determined. Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR'-ee) on Tuesday called Chevron a "proven leader in renewable energy." The town and state surveyed Narragansett residents last summer about the proposed wind turbines. The state says more than three-quarters of those who responded to the survey said they felt positively about the project. ... Read Full Story
