TONY BLAIR’S FUTILE GRAVY TRAIN GOES OFF THE GAZA RAILS

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair ( pictured above ) was forced to cancel a trip to Gaza yesterday after “specific threats to his life” . Now I’ve no doubt that Gaza is a very volatile and dangerous environment that has to be visited with extreme care and caution . But maybe it’s my cynical, suspicious mind that wonders about the fact that it was the Israelis who warned Blair that there was danger . The last thing they want is any residual respectability rubbing off on Hamas as a result of such a visit - if a meeting with Blair actually counts towards that.  And although there are of course uncontrollable splinter groups in Gaza, surely it was in the paramount interests of Hamas to ensure Blair’s safety if the visit had gone ahead ? And then there’s the hypocrisy of Blair himself, who excruciatingly espouses devout Roman Catholicism, which presumably means he doesn’t fear death, yet calls off a visit to a known danger zone at the first hint of trouble when surely “blessed are the peacemakers” should have been ringing in his ears . But above all hangs the banal “jobs-for-the-boys” stupidity of the US, UN, EU and Russia who gave Blair this highly paid and expense-soaked job of Special Middle-East Envoy when it was obvious his track record in terms of both starting wars against Muslim countries and his proven incompetence in almost everything he’s attempted would create conditions that would incite such threats and make his mission impossible .  Oh well Blair’s still got his Faith Foundation - and doubtless his friends in high places will engineer lucrative roles for him as a climate change Czar and maybe even EU President, which is after all why he cynically converted to Roman Catholicism in the first place . His scope for ongoing failure is infinite .

And from one failure to another. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with teenagers yesterday ( above ) who have been convicted of street crimes and are serving community sentences in south London . Sniggering Gormless Gord reportedly asked the young men how knife crime “affected them” and asked them “what could be done” to reduce the number of knives being carried on the streets . Fine bloody leadership Gordon - but so politically correct and inclusive - getting a group of convicted yobs together and turning them into a New Labour focus group . Once again we see that as far as this political nonentity is concerned, activity is a substitute for achievement . It might be a better idea Gord if you built more jails and locked offenders up with proper sentences . And if you want to seek advice about crime, why not ask the VICTIMS ? Or would the information you glean then destroy the tablets of sandstone of the fantasy world you live in ?

But let’s not leave Brown as the sole recipient of our cynicism regarding UK politics . Conservative Party Leader David Cameron ( above ), increasingly touted as the next Prime Minister after New Labour gets thumped at the next general election, has been doing his calculations about the economy . And he told us yesterday that he reckons that because of  ”New Labour mis-management over the last decade”, it was possible that upon his assumption of power “tax increases might be needed to balance the books” . Nothing like getting your blank cheques organised at your opponent’s expense !

The Archbishop of Canterbury ( pictured above ), or as he’s often called now, the Ayatollah of Canterstan, Dr Rowan Williams, is at it again.  Not content with recently advocating the introduction of Sharia Law in Britain, in a speech yesterday he warmed to his pro-Muslim theme by stating that the Christian doctrine is “often offensive to Muslims” . The deluded cleric then went on to outline his master plan, whereby he has written a “highly concilliatory letter to Islamic leaders calling for an alliance between the 2 faiths for the common good”. Why he would feel the need to write such a fawning letter to heads of a violent medieval cult he doesn’t explain.  Now this is the bloke who thinks it’s OK for practising homosexuals to operate within his church - and it would be interesting to see how his Islamic brethren would handle that situation in the cause of the “common good” . It really is high time the Archbishop rode his inter-faith camel into the sunset .

And while we’re on about wastes of space, the second episode of what the BBC describes as its “archaeological drama”, Bonekickers ( cast above ), was screened last night . Judging by the “plots” of the first 2 schoolboy efforts, the BBC must have a whole army of politically correct morons for scriptwriting of this pathetic drivel . Last week, it was moderate Muslims being killed by fundamentalist Christians. This week, they managed to raise collective white guilt for slavery, the notion of demanding official apologies and compensation to descendants of slaves, subliminal support for a bloke who was a caricature of Barack Obama and you would have sworn that the black hoodies in inner-city Bristol were oppressed good guys. The whole “positive racism” effort was topped off by hand-wringing black academics tut-tutting at white middle-class indifference to their heritage . All it needed was Indiana Jones selling the Big Issue in a couple of street scenes.  How the BBC gets away with wasting license payers money on this undergraduate bilge is beyond belief . And in addition to the puerile story lines, it’s also just crap .

Big Brother ( above ) is watching you - or at least trying very hard to do so . The UK’s Information Commissioner yesterday “expressed concern” over government plans to establish a database holding details of EVERY telephone call, text message and internet visit made in the country . Big Brother Brown apparently wants to spy on everyone and everything . As always throughout history, governments use security as the excuse to pry ever more deeper into the lives of citizens . The Information Commissioner is quite right to tell them to get stuffed .

All the showbiz people are enthusing about the performance of the late Heath Ledger as “the Joker” ( above ) in the forthcoming Batman film, “The Dark Knight” . Despite the fact that the public hasn’t even seen the film yet, there’s already talk in the film world about a “posthumous Oscar” being awarded to Ledger . Now call me cynical - even call me heartless - but I wonder if the gushing enthusiasm of the Hollywood “luvvies” has less to do with the performance of the poor bloke and more to do with the fact he’d become a bit of a hero for the gay community - and it’s innumerable representatives in “showbiz”  - for his part in ”Brokeback Mountain” ?
