There is a newer type of database navigation on the market that is also referred to as navigational but is quite different than  the currently understood meaning of navigational data access. I call this newer type of navigation interactive navigational access and compare its operation to the other types of navigation below.  Navigationless access is the ability of the database software to access the database without the user having to instruct the application on how to access the required data. This is specified at a nonprocedural level where the user’s query indicates what data is needed and not how to locate it. Navigational access requires ... Read Full Story

Justice-specific extensible markup language (XML), known as the Global Justice XML Data Model (Global JXDM), is a widely adopted standard for representing text and data in a format that can be exchanged across platforms, languages, and applications, and can be used with a wide range of development tools and utilities. The following list highlights some of the advantages of XML technology and the Global JXDM:  Built to evolve :   XML and Global JXDM is built to evolve and advance with emerging technologies. Simplicity :  Information coded in XML is easy to read and understand, plus it can be processed easily by computers. XML ... Read Full Story

1. Introduction: the elements of XML In drawing up this brief series of articles devoted to parsing an XML document using PHP and DOMXML, we assume that the reader already possesses a certain practice in the server side scripting in PHP, will be appropriate to give some knowledge on the introductory metalanguage XML so those who are already using PHP can begin to understand, if you do not know them, the undeniable benefits of this additional tool available to developers. XML is short for eXtensible Markup Language, talk about a markup language that has some morphological characteristics in common with 'HTML, but which differs ... Read Full Story

Computer Science E-259: XML with Java is a course at Harvard Extension School. It is part of the school's Distance Education Program, which means that students can take this course via the Internet. This course introduces XML as a key enabling technology in Java-based enterprise applications. Students learn the fundamentals of XML and its derivatives, including DTD, SVG, XML Schema, XPath, XQuery, XSL-FO, and XSLT. Additionally, students gain experience with programmatic interfaces to XML like SAX and DOM as well as with standard APIs like JAXP and TrAX. The course introduces J2EE, including JavaServer Pages and Java Servlet, and also explores HTTP, SOAP, web ... Read Full Story

I have been researching and writing on how ANSI SQL can perform very powerful nonlinear hierarchical processing that supports multipath processing known as LCA Query processing. The LCA acronym stands for Lowest Common Ancestor processing. This is the lowest common link point between multiple pathways. This lowest LCA node is used to assure that the results of the query are meaningful even though they encompass multiple pathways. Amazingly, this LCA processing is also performed automatically in ANSI SQL. It turned out to be performed by the ever useful relational Cartesian product used in SQL when hierarchical structures are modeled using the hierarchically oriented SQL ... Read Full Story

Occasionally I produce a document or correspondence that I feel is also useful as a blog. This blog is such a case. It will demonstrate what will be possible in ANSI SQL structured XML data processing in the near future. A major problem I noticed with XML processors today is that they try to process two types of XML together without differentiating their processing. The two different types of XML are markup (semistructured, document) and database (structured, data). By separating the types of processing, each type can be better processed in isolation, but processed the same, both types will suffer. SQL processes structured data, ... Read Full Story

Book Description If you need to create or use formal descriptions of XML vocabularies, the W3C’s XML Schema offers a powerful set of tools for defining acceptable document structures and content. An alternative to DTDs as the way to describe and validate data in an XML environment, XML Schema enables developers to create precise descriptions with a richer set of datatypes?such as booleans, numbers, currencies, dates and times?that are essential for today?s applications. Schemas are powerful, but that power comes with substantial complexity. This concise book explains the ins and outs of XML Schema, including design choices, best practices, and limitations. Particularly valuable are ... Read Full Story
On average, an Intel employee spends 2-to-4 hours per month authoring SRs and an equal amount of time reading SRs from team members. Spread across a 40,000-person organization, this means that roughly 160,000 hours a month are spent reading and writing SRs. Therefore, improving the status reporting process would both contribute toward Intel’s goal of operational excellence and provide a tangible return on investment. Using standards-based...

Creating applications that use a hybrid of relational data and XML data is easy thanks to the pureXML feature of IBM DB2 database servers. In this tutorial, you use PHP to create a Web application that connects to an IBM DB2 Express-C database and stores some of its data in traditional relational database columns, and some of it in native XML columns. You also learn how to use SQL/XML queries to retrieve, insert, update, and delete data from...
