There aren't many breakout hits in Microsoft's portal for user-created Xbox 360 games, but the idea shows promise. This week, Microsoft provided Wired.com with access to its XNA Creators Club Online , an initiative that lets budding game designers make Xbox 360 games with the company's XNA development framework, then upload them to be critiqued by their peers. Later this year, Microsoft will roll out the games to the public on the Xbox 360, promising an ever-expanding library of user-created games that might give birth to the Next Big Thing. For now, it's a collection of half-baked projects in development -- not a lot ... Read Full Story

Most developers I know decided to enter the computer field and specifically programming because of computer games. Game development can be one of the most challenging disciplines of software engineering-it can also be the most rewarding! Never before has it been possible for the masses to create games for a game console, much less a next generation game console. We are coming in on the ground floor of a technology that is going to experience tremendous growth. Microsoft is leading the way into how content will be created for game consoles. Soon other game console manufacturers will be jumping at a way to allow ... Read Full Story

[Continuing the XNA Community Games coverage blowout by other means,  Gamasutra 's Christian Nutt recently got to chat to Weapon Of Choice creator Nathan Fouts, who has a really interesting story to tell about his Xbox 360 egalitarian game debut - and his game is really retro-creepy cool in the best 'programmer art' fashion, too!] The XNA Creators' Club is being touted as a way for semi-pro and amateur developers to bring their designs to the masses via XNA Community Games, which launch alongside the New Xbox Experience today. Prior to SP1 the Surface SDK supported only XNA Game Studio 2.0, which lacked support for Visual Studio 2008.  Most people don't know it, but our the Surface SDK 1.0 SP1 release added support for XNA Game Studio 3.0 and later.  And starting with version 3.0, XNA Game Studio supports Visual Studio 2008. It is possible to use premultiplied alpha with XNA Game Studio, but the bad news is we don't do much to help you with it. Why not? Yeah.  Our bad.  In fact one of my biggest regrets about the design of the XNA Framework is that we didn't do more to make this easier! To use premultiplied alpha, you must do three things:   1 – Set The Blend State Premultiplied alpha blending is configured like this: graphicsDevice.RenderState...

I've been wanting to find a better way to get 2D geometry content into my XNA Game Studio projects. Laying out lines and triangles on graph paper, then entering coordinates by hand into code files gets old fast! I was looking for a 2D illustration package that I could use instead, then translate from its data files into something I could read from XNA. Microsoft Expression Design is a pretty nice tool for laying out lines and shapes, and I...
