Apple has quietly updated its professional and server lines with new high-end configurations. The Mac Pro quad-core model now includes an option to replace the base configuration's 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon processor with a 3.33 GHz Intel Xeon. Price? $1,200 for the processor swap. Newly available in both the quad-core model and the eight-core model is the capability to replace each of base configuration's hard drives with 2 TB 7200 rpm drives...  

Apple has added new build-to-order options for some of its Mac Pro and Xserve models. Specifically, a 3.33GHz 3500-series Xeon processor is now an option for the lower-end quad-core Mac Pro. Also, Apple now offers a 2TB drive option for both Mac Pros and Xserves. That's right, for a whopping $1,200, you can bump your quad-core Mac Pro to a 3.33Ghz Nehalem-based Xeon processor—the 8-core Mac Pro still maxes out at 2.93GHz...

Apple have quietly updated their Mac Pro desktop systems, adding a new processor option together with greater storage.  Buyers looking for the most powerful Mac Pro around are now able to specify a 3.33GHz Intel Xeon quad-core CPU, which is a whopping $1,200 on top of the regular machine.  The new CPU joins the existing entry-level 2.66GHz Xeon and 2.93GHz Xeon, the latter of which is a $400 option. Reviewer James Galbraith (macworld.com) gives the new quad-core 27-inch iMac computers with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 “Nehalem” processors 4.5/5 mice, calling them “worth the wait.” In performance tests, writes Galbraith, the 2.55GHz Core i5 iMac was “the fastest standard configuration Mac we’ve ever tested” and the Core i7 “showed even greater performance prowess.”

Our iMac review included a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo chip inside, but we received the top-of-the-line iMac housing the more promising 2.8GHz Core i7 processor. Do more cores make up for lower clock speeds?
