A lot of people have been taught that the real Ahwahneechees were Miwoks. Since the early 1900s people started to write that the Ahwahneechees were Miwoks, but the real facts might be different.
If one were the read "DISCOVERY OF THE YOSEMITE, AND THE INDIAN WAR OF 1851, WHICH LED TO THAT EVENT. BY LAFAYETTE HOUGHTON BUNNELL, M.D., OF THE MARIPOSA BATTALION, ONE OF THE DISCOVERERS, LATE SURGEON THIRTY-SIXTH REGIMENT WISCONSIN VOLUNTEERS."
People might be surprised. This book was the first written account by Lafayette H. Bunnell, the doctor of the Mariposa Battalion. I have seen the revised versions, but the original first print edition is the best one to read. Bunnell was one of the first persons to meet Tenaya and document what he said.

The true facts for all us to remember is that Chief Tenaya was a Mono Lake Paiute with Vowchester aka Chief Bautista aiding James Savage to help capture Tenaya. History should also include the 1890 petition of the Yosemite Indian's claim to Yosemite National Park.
