A Swiss adventurer trying to soar from Morocco to Spain on jet-powered wings ditched safely into the Atlantic on Wednesday after hitting turbulence and clouds so thick he could not tell if he was flying up or down. The bad weather — rather than a mechanical malfunction, as reported earlier by the project's sponsors — thwarted Yves Rossy's bid to become the first person to achieve such an intercontinental crossing. Rossy waved from the cold blue sea while awaiting rescue, his red wing and striped parachute floating beside him. In time, a rescuer helicopter winched him from the wind-swept waters to safety. Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy ditched in the sea Wednesday in a failed bid to make aviation history by flying from Africa to Europe using a jet-powered wing attached to his back. The 50-year-old former fighter pilot waved to rescuers before a helicopter carrying a team of paramedics which had been following him throughout the attempt plucked him to safety, live television images showed. He gave the thumbs up sign and walked off the helicopter unaided when it landed in Spain before being taken to hospital for a check-up as a precaution. Rossy was attempting to complete the first intercontinental flight using just a jetpack. ... Read Full Story

Yves Rossy, better known as the ‘Jetman,’ failed in his first attempt to make an intercontinental flight between Europe and Africa. After launching over Morocco, Rossy was heading for Spain over the Strait of Gibraltar when he disappeared from view on the live TV broadcast. Several minutes later the cameras found him swimming in the Atlantic with his parachute. Rossy has made several successful flights with his jet-powered wing which attaches like a backpack. Last year he crossed the English Channel and he has also made numerous flights in the Alps . At a press conference in Spain after the ditching, Rossy thanked his ... Read Full Story

I wouldnt want wings, because that would just be an awful thing to see these humongous feathery growths coming out of my back. My first thought would be - 'will radiotherapy help this'? Storm of Xmen fame - now there's someone who flies with style. A man today, nearly turned this into reality. Yves Rossy , a chap from Switzerland made this amazing 'kick bum' rocket device which he strapped to his back.... Then Yves Rossy (who sounds like a lovely ... Read Full Story

Daredevil inventor and pilot Yves Rossy has crashed into the ocean after trying to fly from Africa to Europe with a winged 150mph jetpack. It is thought a malfunction with his jet wing caused Rossy - dubbed Rocket Man - to crash land in the Straits of Gibraltar shortly after his launch. Rossy had leapt from a plane at 6,500ft before extending his eight-foot carbon fibre wings and engaging his four-cylinder jet pack. This should have propelled him to 150mph for the 15 minute journey which would have landed him a place in the record books as the first person to make a intercontinental ... Read Full Story
