2009 Recap: The Goats had a decent 2009, all things considered. They qualified for the playoffs after finishing fourth in the West, but they led their conference for most of the year, so their final 13-11-6 record was a bit of a downer. Plus, they got schooled in the playoffs by their crosstown rival, the LA Gals. All in all, Preki’s posse was disappointing. The Chicago Fire clinched a playoff spot by beating CD Chivas USA 1-0 in their season finale Thursday night. The Fire (11-7-12) got an own goal from Chivas' Eduardo Lillingston in the 68th minute. The forward headed Cuauhtemoc Blanco's corner kick — Chicago's 14th of the game — past goalkeeper Zach Thornton. The victory snapped the Fire's 0-4-2 stretch and secured Chicago's fifth consecutive appearance in the MLS Cup playoffs, where it will hold the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton has been voted the 2009 Goalkeeper of the Year for the second time in his MLS career. Thornton, 36, arguably had the best season of his 13-year MLS career. He led Chivas to a 13-11-6 record and posted a career-best and MLS-best 12 shutouts with an MLS-leading 0.87 goals-against average, second-lowest in league history.

Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton was named Major League Soccer's Comeback Player of the Year on Tuesday, adding another trophy to his collection after being named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year last week. The 36-year-old from Edgewood, Md., led Chivas to its fourth consecutive playoff berth and had the top mark in MLS in both shutouts (12) and goals-against average (0.87).
