Watchmen (2009) Director : Zack Snyder By Roderick Heath And lo, there was Alan Moore, bearded, cranky god of the graphic novel. Moore’s totemic work had an instant effect on all the other comic book artists of the late ’80s and ’90s: suddenly every one of them seemed to have recurring pop images turned into grim symbols; digressive, associative story flow; purple passages; and sadistic antiheroes. Watching Watchmen , I felt locked in a time capsule of the cyberpunk geek culture I grew up with. Still, I’ve always been a bit cynical then about the actual level of depth and sophistication of the “graphic ... Read Full Story

Posted by Allan Ford 7 March, 2009 From my perspective, Snyder’s Watchmen achieves two goals. It delivers a visually stimulating companion piece for dedicated fans. And it provides a portal for newcomers taking their first tour through Moore and Gibbons’ thought-provoking but pessimistic universe. Their next step should be toward the bookstore, where the definitive version of Watchmen still waits. It’s somewhat appropriate for director Zack Snyder to accept the challenge of translating Watchmen to film. Like the proud but overmatched Spartans in Snyder’s breakthrough smash, 300, he’s waging a battle that can’t be won. Whatever version he delivers, it will be compared to ... Read Full Story

I never thought it was a good idea in the first place. When it was first announced that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' comic book masterwork THE WATCHMEN would be adapted to the big screen many moons ago, my hackles were raised like never before. This had been back when no less of a cinematic legend Terry Gilliam had been initially attached to the project. It just didn't feel right. In order to transform Moore/Gibbons' vision to the screen, I feared that much would be lost. Too much, in fact. I didn't want my WATCHMEN corrupted or diminished in any way, shape or form. ... Fans should plan to savor every visual morsel when "Watchmen" swoops into movie theaters Friday because the subversive superheroes of the landmark comic book series may never return to the big screen. "There's no way I would be involved in a sequel or prequel," said director Zack Snyder, who turned the graphic novel "300" into a 2007 blockbuster. "Will they make one? I have no idea how you would. The work is the work. This movie is about ideas. Anything else you would do, if you did a sequel to it, misses the point entirely of what 'Watchmen' is," he said. It's unclear whether ... Watchmen (2009). Directed by Zack Snyder . Last week I didn't know what to expect from Watchmen. I read a few of the favourable reviews this week and became really interested in this film. This afternoon I was completely blown away from the first scene to the last. Watchmen is The Dark Knight of 2009. The opening credits are amazing and left me wanting to watch them again to see what I might have missed (I noticed younger versions of David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Truman Capote and Andy Warhol). This film is packed with pop culture references to the 1980s and easter eggs — ... Read Full Story

While doing press for Bright Star, HitFix was able to get actress Abbie Cornish to dish some dirt on the upcoming Zack Snyder film Sucker Punch, which began shooting in Vancouver last month. As you know already, Snyder has called the film "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns", a 1950's-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who...
