A community portal about Zimbabwe with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Zimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, and formerly known as the Republic of Rhodesia, is a landlocked country in the southern part of the continent of Africa, between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It borders South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east. The name Zimbabwe derives from "dzimba dzemabwe" meaning "houses of stone" in the Shona language. Its use as the country's name is a tribute to Great Zimbabwe, site of the capital of the Munhumutapa Empire.

Rainbow's End got its name from its bumper crops of grain, fruit and vegetables. But now the pot of gold is empty. Most of the land is derelict and cut off by a collapsed bridge. Once one of the most productive farms in this troubled southern African nation, Rainbow's End will have very little to harvest next season, even as farmers' organizations forecast huge crop shortfalls and the U.N. says 2 million Zimbabweans — nearly one-fourth of the population — will need food aid in January. President Robert Mugabe's campaign to run Zimbabwe's whites off their farms and redistribute them to the black majority ... Read Full Story
HARARE (Reuters) - Swiss food company Nestle has suspended operations in Zimbabwe, complaining of harassment after it pulled out of a deal to buy milk from a farm taken over by President Robert Mugabe's family. Nestle said it received an unannounced visit from government officials and police on December 19 and was forced to accept a milk delivery from non-contracted suppliers. Two of its managers were questioned by police and released without charge the same day. "Since under such circumstances normal operations and the safety of employees are no longer guaranteed, Nestle decided to temporarily shut down the facility," the world's largest food group ... Zimbabwe needs 45 billion dollars to return its economy to peak levels seen more than a decade ago, Finance Minister Tendai Biti said Wednesday. But he warned that doubts over the future of the strained unity government were hampering the still fragile economic recovery. "About 45 billion dollars is required to get the country back to its peak level of 1996-97," Biti told reporters at the launch of a three-year economic blueprint. Zimbabwe's economy has contracted every year since 1997, but is expected to grow 4.7 percent this year, after the local currency was abandoned in January and the unity government took office the ... by Godfrey Marawanyika HWANGE, Zimbabwe (AFP) -- Zimbabwe's already dim electricity supply faces a new threat, as the country's main power plant says it needs to dig for new coal reserves under a river inside a national park to keep running. Hwange Colliery says it only has enough coal to power its 940 megawatt plant for three more years. Shortages of coal and working capital, as well as ageing and broken equipment, have already forced the shutdown of three smaller power stations across Zimbabwe, causing daily blackouts that have plagued the country for years. The company says its only viable new deposits of coal ... Read Full Story
HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and his rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have agreed on commissions to drive media and electoral reforms, one of the key issues which has been threatening their power-sharing deal. Mugabe and Tsvangirai formed a unity government earlier this year to try to end a decade-long political and economic crisis, but the coalition has been struggling with disputes over the pace of reforms and the appointment of senior state officials. In a statement after a meeting between Mugabe and Tsvangirai on Monday, the government said the leaders had appointed people nominated by a parliamentary committee to sit on ... Read Full Story

Zimbabwean politics are fascinating, if sometimes frightening, to follow. Long-time dictator Robert Mugabe was forced into a transitional coalition government after stealing elections in March 2008 and unleashing severe violence against opposition politicians, party members, and independent human rights advocates. He and his party, ZANU-PF, have since successfully stalled much of the implementation of the Global Political Agreement (GPA...
