Announcing "Wikizines" and the future of the magazine industry

Over the past few months we've had conversations with many of you and asked what Zimbio means to you.  It became clear that while we were doing something right, we weren't yet talking about it in the right way.  You wanted to know more about where Zimbio was headed as a company.

So with much of your help, today we've released improvements to our mission statement and to the vocabulary used on our site.  Our updated mission statement reads as follows:

"Our mission is to help you become an influential player in how stories are created, shaped and shared.

We enable our contributors to build wikizines - interactive magazines that anyone can create or edit - with coverage of current events, cultural reference points, and niche areas of interest. We make it simple for people to compile the web's most relevant and dynamic content into easily-searched topics, so readers can find and react to the full story from multiple perspectives."

So "portals" are now called "wikizines", which are basically wiki-based magazines. When testing the word "portal", you were confused by what it meant. "Wikizine" is not a known word (yet!), but you know what wikis are, and what magazines are, and for the most part, you get that we're a hybrid of the two. Hopefully you'll understand what Zimbio is trying to do when you hear that we're building the future of the magazine business - thousands of online niche publications, run by members, with articles, news, pictures, videos, etc, covering news and politics (similar to Time), pop culture (People), travel (Conde Nast Traveler) and special interests (Field and Stream). We're much more specific, much more interactive, and much more democratic. But this is the future of how people will read up on, follow, and share their stories and interests.

Zimbio is doing to magazines what Wikipedia did to the encylopedia.

Also, "Gurus" are now called "Editors" to better reflect their role, which is guiding community contributions rather than solely providing expertise on a specific subject.

So that's the big vocab change. Wikizines. Same great experience, but you might be able to better guess some of the new features coming down the pike.  And we can't wait to get to 'em.

I love the idea of wikizines. I have been writing articles that I feel passionate about and now I think this new term applies to the medium we are using. Keep up the good work Zimbio. --P.R.
Yep, it's awesome and your stories come up in search engines MUCH MORE QUICKLY. Thanks, Zimbio !
Love it Zimbio. Wikizines is the wave of the future. Great job. I will post all my articles here.
sounds good
I have posting all of my articles for about a month but it doesn't seem than anyone reads them, even though its content is breaking news and current events. So eventhough I really like the concept proposed here, I am not convinced...but nice people for sure! Anne www.rushprnews.com
ok
It's a step forward, the Wikizines concept while far from being a perfect means to share information does have its merits and even though it is still hard to know to what extent it will progress, I think that given the proper exposure and commitment from the owners it will be here to stay. Finding ways to express one's thought and opinions in any medium is becoming easier each day with new media and social sites sprouting up everywhere, however if Zimbio keeps moving forward and inovating the way that the articles are delivered to readers and improving on the technology to provide an easy and user friendly platform by which we can all create Wikines then it will carve a niche of its own and more readers will pass by to use the site. I'm so excited to have found zimbio. It lends itself to even greater creative expression.
In regards to Zimbio.com: I am absolutely impressed with this site! It’s like a NET magazine and I love posting here and there are many intelligent posters also, and Zimbio makes posters feel like they are part of the community family. What’s most impressive about Zimbio.com is how expediently and savvy are in posting member stories on the NET. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed when I Google searched on topics that I had posted here and there it was FIRST page on Google search! Definitely Zimbio is a must for AVID bloggers around and much KUDOS to the crew that makes Zimbio.com the best place for bloggers! Thank You! Marc Chamot
