Zithromax, at the recommended dose, should not be relied upon to treat gonorrhea or syphilis. Antimicrobial agents used in high doses for short periods of time to treat non-gonococcal urethritis may mask or delay the symptoms of incubating gonorrhea or syphilis. All patients with sexually-transmitted urethritis or cervicitis should have a serologic test for syphilis and appropriate cultures for gonorrhea performed at the time of diagnosis. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy and follow-up tests for these diseases should be initiated if infection is confirmed. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Zithromax (azithromycin) and other antibacterial drugs, Zithromax (azithromycin) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take Zithromax. This includes Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids can make Zithromax less effective when taken at the same time. Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to. Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Zithromax can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun.
Five things to know before giving antibiotic to children:
1. Antibiotics only work on ear infections that are bacterial in origin, they do nothing for those caused by viruses such as colds, allergies, mechanical obstructions, or nutrition.
2. Antibiotics do not permanently eliminate build-up fluid in the middle ear, the source of chronic ear infections.
3. A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that children who took Amoxicillin for chronic infections were actually 2-6 times more likely to have a recurrence of fluid build-up.
4. Excessive antibiotic use can disrupt the balance of beneficial intestinal bacteria and can lead to digestive disturbances and recurrent infections.
5. Antibiotics do not help pain during the most painful first 24 hours, and help pain only minimally after that.
EVALUATION OF INFERTILITY: Blood tests: Female: FSH (menopause), TSH (thyroid disease), Prolactin (brain tumor), Progesterone (7 days after expected ovulation, around 21 days after start of menstruation), HSG (to check if uterine tubes are open). If masculinization: testosterone, DHEAS, 17-oh progesterone, sonogram of ovaries. Male: semen analysis.
For sinusitis caused by virus infection, antibiotic cure is not necessary. Only acute sinus infection from bacteria is generally taken care of with antibiotic treatment. That is when there is much facial pain pus generation and other self care treatment does not seem to work. Medicines for pain such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen can lessen the pain and inflammation. These medications help to open the nasal passage by reducing inflammation.and must be able to kill the bacterial types. Medications like Amoxicillin (Amoxil) , cefaclor (Ceclor), loracarbef (Lorabid), clarithromycin (Biaxin), azithromycin (Zithromax), sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra) antibiotic may be used as first choices to treat sinus.
What is Post Nasal Drip?
Scientifically speaking, post nasal drip happens when excessive mucus appears because of the sinuses. It can accumulate in the throat or at the back of your nose and can be caused by sinusitis (as already mentioned), rhinitis or laryngopharyngeal acid reflux. Allergies can also trigger it or make it worse, no matter the season of the year when it appears.
The term post nasal drip is not used that much by some of the doctors because it is considered to be obsolete. Nowadays, it is also known as the Chronic Upper Airway Cough Syndrome. In any case, the term post nasal drip is still quite common in medical literature.
There are different possible symptoms to take into account when diagnosing post nasal drips. The most common ones are the need to constantly swallow and/or spit, congestions in the sinus and nasal passages, tickling sensation in the throat, crystals found in the tonsils (they are in most cases white or yellow), chronic sore throat, coughing, nausea (caused by mucus accumulating in the stomach) and vomiting (caused by the same reason as nausea). Bad breath is also a very common symptom of post nasal drip.
