Dawn is coming soon. The lights are off, the sound system is silent, and the beasts of the Monterey Bay Aquarium have the place mostly to themselves: the otters, the anemones, the octopuses, the great white shark in the big tank, the lame young albatross in its rooftop cage — and Kacey Kurimura, who is at the kitchen sink in her apron and waterproof boots, reaching for a knife.  

MONTEREY Event honors 'Queen of Cannery Row' Aremembrance of Cannery Row legend Kalisa Moore will be held 7p.m. Wednesday at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Known as the "Queen of Cannery Row," Moore died last month at 83 years old.

A young female white shark who spent the past two months at the Monterey Bay Aquarium returned to the wild early Wednesday. Her departure marks the fifth time the aquarium has successfully exhibited and released a great white.  

It sounds like a classic horror story—eyeless, mouthless worms lurk in the dark, settling onto dead animals and sending out green "roots" to devour their bones. In fact, such "boneworms" do exist in the deep sea. It's not anywhere you'd expect. For the last two years though, we've made a pilgrimage to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, for the annual donor breakfast. They open the aquarium two hours early and you get all the docents and tanks to yourselves, to enjoy with coffee, fruit and a surprisingly good variety of scones and pastries. The U.S. Senate confirmed Monterey Bay Aquarium and Research Institute President Marcia McNutt as the first female director of the U.S. Geological Survey on Wednesday. McNutt will also serve as science adviser to the Interior secretary.
