Claude Stanley Choules, the last known combat veteran from World War I, died this week at a nursing home in the Australia city of Perth at 110 years old.
Born in Britain, Choules — nicknamed “Chuckles” by his shipmates in the Australian Navy — had a 41-year military career that began with training with the British Royal Navy, just one month after he turned 14.
