Dear Dr. Johns: I received information about the food additive xylitol being toxic. Having three dogs of my own, I am very concerned that they may inadvertently ingest some xylitol. Perhaps a short warning from you would save some of our pets. Mary  

Xylitol is a sugar-alcohol sweetener found in many sugar free candies, chewing gums, baked goods and dental products. In humans, ingestion of large quantities of xylitol may have a mild laxtive effect. In dogs, ingestion of even small amounts of xylitol can be deadly. Even more deadly than the "common" toxic sweet, chocolate. Special caution is advised for chocolate and other candies sweetened with xylitol. Be aware of the dangers of xylitol...
