The journey to make Daybreakers started in November 2004 when Lionsgate received the script to the flick. Spierig brothers collaborated before in the 2003 film Undead. After 2 years, the film received financing help from Film Finance firm Australia. Because of this, the film is slated to be shot in Australia.
Casting started in May 2007 with Hawke getting the lead role. Later, Neill joined the cast. Filming commenced 2 months later on July 16, 2007. WETA, the same company that created the creature effects for The Lord of the Rings trilogy are also behind Daybreakers. The flick's budget was $21 million but it also received assistance from the state government. They finished filming in September 2007 - right in good time. There were some re-shoots but these were done quick and further delays were evaded.
Hawke describes the film as a story of man's pacing with natural resources. Folks have been abusing the planet's resources so now there are desires for substitutes.
