“Do you guys have any short term memory? Do you have anything? You just said, yeah let’s be clear about it, you can’t just overthrow a government, occupy a capital, knock over their statues, stack their prisoners, refer to the, refer to the horrific level of civilian casualties as birth pangs of democracy. Of course obviously this situation isn’t just the dangerous escalation of once mordent cold war hostilities. It’s a chance for our Presidential nominees to get inside the Commander in Chief simulator, and play a little make believe.” –Jon Stewart (mocks President Bush’s lack of short-term memory about when it’s OK to invade other countries, as well as McCain’s presumptuousness for dispatching “Droopy-Dog and Howdy Doody” (Lieberman and Graham) to Georgia, despite his status as candidate for President.)

All hell seems to be breaking loose in Afghanistan, at a time when most Western observers are focusing on the Georgia crisis. Ten French troops killed by 100 guerrillas. An attack on US troops in Khost, then a bombing there. It is 1982 all over again only it is NATO being targeted now.

There are now 4143 dead American soldiers in Iraq and 408 in Afghanistan. The civilians who usually go uncounted make the news because one of the civilians was the head of a Sunni militia (’Awakening Council’) who assisted in “The Surge”[tm]
The Russians have told the French and Germans they will pull back to South Ossetia and set up a buffer zone. Georgia claims ethnic cleansing, massacres, and genocide, but there’s been NO confirmation by international media with access, and they appear to HAVE access. Analysis: South Ossetia and the oil factor By JOHN C.K. DALY, UPI International Correspondent Published: Aug. 12, 2008 at 2:46 PM
The rising conflict also has shuttered Georgia’s Batumi (200,000 bpd) and Poti (100,000 bpd) Black Sea ports, both supplied by rail. Poti was closed following Russian airstrikes reported on Aug. 8. Adding to the grim picture, the fighting also has closed in exports from Kulevi, Georgia’s third Black Sea oil terminus, opened last year and capable of shipping 200,000 bpd.
The final result of the conflict is to leave the West bereft of BTC’s 1 million bpd exports, which alone represent more than 1 percent of the world’s daily consumption, along with the 590,000 additional bpd shipments from Georgia’s three Black Sea ports and Supsa, shipped by tanker through the Turkish Straits.[In Full with free registration]

[August 18 2008] Travus T. Hipp Morning News & Commentary: It’s A Good Morning To Unload A Can Of Whoop-Ass On *Everyone* Involved In The Military Occupation Of Other Nations, Including The Ongoing American Occupation Of Hawaii
The entire responsibility for this fratricidal war, for thousands of children, women and elderly dead people, for the inhabitants of South Ossetia and of Georgia falls exclusively on the current President, on the Parliament and on the Government of Georgia. The irresponsibility and the adventurism of the Saakashvili regime have no limits. The President of Georgia and his team, undoubtedly, are criminals and must be held responsible. –Georgia Peace Committee, Official Statement
The conflict in South Ossetia may be in standoff mode, but it certainly isn’t over. It has been said repeatedly in reports that the conflict is deep rooted and complex. Isn’t everything?

In The News: The Russian incursion into Georgia to ’spank’ them for violating South Ossetian territory, launching missile attacks on villages (with US supplied rocket launchers), and killing Russian and Ossetian civilian continues at 45 miles an hour on paved roads to NO resistance. The Georgian military has apparently fallen apart. The Russians have secured Gori, a main transport hub in Georgia. The US says it will not militarily intervene. Sitrep.
In Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf is apparently negotiating to step down which would sidestep an impending impeachment, an impeachment which is due to be filed in the Pakistani parliament next week.
