There are not very kinds of toys whose appeal lasts and lasts without end, and teddy bears are one type of toy that has. Their massive popularity has endured for generations, and undoubtedly will continue for generations to come. However, teddy bears haven't always been one of our most important toys. They were born in the early Twentieth century, after an unfortunate sequence of events that you may find surpising as the origin of a children's toy.
Teddy bears received their name from American President Theodore Roosevelt, since "Teddy" is the short form of the name "Theodore". In 1902, President Roosevelt attended a hunting trip with the governor of Mississippi along with a number of others. On the expedition they conducted a bear hunting competition, and Roosevelt was one of the only ones who had not yet shot a bear. Some members of Roosevelt's entourage tried to help him win the competition by capturing and subduing a bear, then summoning Roosevelt to come shoot it. But he refused to shoot the bear himself, feeling that this violated the spirit of the competition since he himself did not capture the bear. But the bear had been beaten over the head during its capture and was suffering, so Roosevelt asked that the bear be put down.
The story of course became big news, and was reproduced in a political cartoon in the Washington Post. Toy designer Morris Michtom saw the media coverage and had an immediate inspiration to create a new toy based on the incident. He created cute stuffed bears and placed them in his shop window, with a signing reading "Teddy's Bear", a smart way to capitalize on the publicity. The bears became an immediate hit, prompting Michtom to enlargen his business by founding the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company. Around 1906, many copycat companies had begun producing similar items, and they became the biggest toy craze the world had ever seen up until that point.
Today teddy bears are still the most basic and universal of all toys, beloved by children and adults alike all around the globe. It might seem odd that such an unfortunate event started this mania for adorable stuffed animals for kids, but perhaps the joy that teddy bears have given to the world have made something good out of that unfortunate situation.
