Fantastic!
Its really worth every penny. More robust than I expected, does corners and edges, carpets and hardwood floring. So much better than running with the cables up and down.
It does not do stairs and makes some noise but hey I would not go back to my old vac!!!! Recomended!

Excellent Roomba
I already had one of these and bought another as a present, Amazon best price at that point, this is an excellent machine, ideal for busy (or lazy) people, very effective at cleaning, highly recommended. NB shop around for parts, brushes , filters etc, some differences on web

A gimmick not a practical item
My dad was give one of these and I have to say I am completely underwhelmed by it. Yes it is a neat idea and a topic of conversation, but when that wears off you have left a very inefficient vacuum cleaner that is pretty awful at doing its job. You really don't want to set it going whilst you are at home as it drones on for ages before it finally docks (and it doesn't do that terribly well).

It doesn't pick up well and it only has a very small capacity. I can vacumn a decent sized room properly with a regular cleaner in 5-10 minutes, whereas this thing takes more like 30 at least. I don't know if this is the same model, but my dad's one wanders aimlessly in all directions not following any particular pattern. It can't get into hard to reach spots and it can't get under furniture if it is too low.

Its worth pointing out also that unless you move all your furniture out of the room it won't get into a lot of places like you would if you moved things as you vacuumed with a regular cleaner.

It also doesn't seem very sturdy a design, my Dad had his for 6 months before something broke in it. Oh and when it goes under furniture, if the furniture is too low it will scratch the top of the cleaner.

The biggest waste of money on a vacuum cleaner in my opinion, get a "Henry" vacuum cleaner; not as cool, but much better at doing the job!

Surprising, Its not a novelty!
To be honest, my expectations were not that high to begin with. When I received this as a gift I was expecting a high tech toy more than a good vacuum cleaner. I was impressed by iRobots online demonstration and the unique programming more than anything else.

What I got was indeed "unique programming", but also a vacuum that is fairly effective. I have never owned a Roomba before, but have read various reviews. Apparently this unit has a few of the bugs worked out from it predecessors. My concern would be the ongoing maintenance costs. The parts are lightweight and I question the durability over the long haul. Regardless, it is a trade off, your time or the cost of a few parts from time to time. That is the way I look at it.

The Roomba takes about 30-45 minutes per room, depending on the size. The virtual wall feature is excellent in keeping Roomba in a designated area. Roomba will not fall down stairs and is quite good at navigating through some very tight and awkward spaces. Roomba can get stuck if a coffee table, kick-plate or sofa is at just the wrong height. So far I have only run into one problem area, but was able to resolve the issue by adjusting the couch. The automatic re-docking feature after the area is cleaned and/or the battery is low is really nice. You can start Roomba, go away only to find the designated area clean and the unit re-docked and recharging for the next use. Recharge time is around 3 hours or for a deep charge, 16 hours is recommended. The manufacturer recommends cleaning the filter and catch-bin area after every 3-5 uses. For best results, I try to clean it after each session. It is very easy to detach the cleaning compartment and filter area. It is about as quick and simple as cleaning the lint catcher on your dryer.

Preventative cleaner.
I've usually only sold these, working in a shop that sells them, and I'd heard and read about how they work and how good they are. I finally bought one, and I am rather impressed.
If you use it every day, the results are impressive. It will struggle to make your carpet immaculate if you're using it for the first time, as it is designed to be used every day, thus preventing dirt from penetrating deep into your carpet.
Non-carpeted floors are where you'll see the best results from the Roomba, even from the first go.
However, I have a big thick rug in my lounge (and it is very thick, like shagpile or something... i don't know) and it often struggles to get onto that because of the corner brush. It can get onto it though sometimes, when it finds a bit close enough to the ground, so it even manages that difficule obstacle.
I love the way it decides how to clean, it looks really random, but it has a method behind it. It is guarenteed to clean every inch of your floor that it can get to. It sometimes can't clean corners massively well though because of the size of it, and the size of the corner brushes.
It is great how it just docks when it is low on battery and then carries on.
It would be better if the exhaust thing on it was directed upwards, rather than backwards, as it blows the dust around and makes it more difficult to clean, but it has so far always eventually picked up all of the dirt and dust, without fail.
I would definately recommend this vacuum, although I would have to say that it would be better to get one of the models with the scheduler on it, because that would be even less effort, as you wouldn't even have to turn it on.
