Kauffman Foundation Releases Latest Index of Entrepreneurial Activity

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation last week released its latest Index of Entrepreneurial Activity. The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity indicated that overall entrepreneurial activity increased in the United States last year. In 2008, an average of 0.32 percent of the adult population, or 320 out of 100,000 adults, created a new business each month. In 2007, the overall entrepreneurial activity rate was 0.30 percent.  The latest index showed the biggest increase in entrepreneurial activity since the foundation began tracking the activity in 1996. The index also showed that more lower-income than higher-income ventures were started — a sign that many people turned to entrepreneurship because job openings were scarce as a result of the recession. According to the report, the states with the highest 2008 entrepreneurial activity rates were Georgia, New Mexico, Montana, Arizona, Alaska and California. The states with the lowest entrepreneurial activity rates according to the Index were Pennsylvania, Missouri, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Iowa and Ohio.
