eLearning DevCon 07- mLearning Session Updates

I've received a lot of emails asking for information on the two sessions I was scheduled to present at eLearning DevCon 07 . Unfortunately, some situations have changed and I won't be attending DevCon. I will, however, post the information from these presentations here at mLearning-World.com.  I am also working on creating a 'virtual' session through SecondLife.  When I am able to source a meeting hall & time, I'll post the information for these sessions here. Cloud Computing: money and mobilty

by Jonathan Nalder mLearnxyz.net So what does mobile learning have to do with ‘cloud computing’? And just what is ‘cloud computing’? Anyone who has been into tech for even 10 years will remember the big step it was to buy that first PC. Mine was via my parents in 1988 - the screen was CGA with wait for it - 3 colours! It cost over $2500 at the time. So did our next PC - a 386. So did the next, a Pentium IV. My latest machine, a Macbook Pro also cost just over this same $2500 line. What’s... Read Full Story

Making Content on Small Devices Look Great

Life has been quite busy lately, other than some major development projects, we are piloting a program to send quality tips to cell phones of reps in various types of call centers. Sadly, this has meant neglecting my writing. Yesterday, I found a great article on the Opera Developer's Forum about making the best use of a mobile device's screen. Making Small Devices Look Great Snip:     In this article "device" means a small, mobile unit such as a smart phone or PDA . The rules for designing... Read Full Story

Book Chapter on Mlearning and the workplace learner

I have been invited by Dr. Mohamed Ally to contribute a book chapter to a book on ‘mobile learning in education and training’ to be printed by Althabasca University Press . The book chapter will essentially be an expansion of my paper submitted to the mLearn 2006 conference. It will centre on the use of mLearning with workplace learners and in the use of web based resources to compile ePortfolios with mobile phones. Re-working the original paper has caused me to realise how quickly things... Read Full Story

Evangelising mLearning or use of technology in learning

My work over the last couple of years as a elearning facilitator plus several opportunities for me to present my findings about mlearning to staff has taught me a couple of things. Caryl Oliver, from William Angliss TAFE has brought up some salient points about bringing mlearning into the culture of a training college . From my perspective, people will only make the time and effort to engage with the use of technology if:- They have to or have been told they have to. In this case, some... Read Full Story

MoLTA 2007

It was the first NZ mLearning conference and therefore attended by a select group of just under 30 people. There was a good mix of papers beginning with Kay Fielden from Unitec presenting an interesting paper on ‘cell phones in NZ secondary schools’. She wanted to find out why IT & in particular cell phone usage was not... Read Full Story

Walled Gardens and Mobile Learning

In educational technology circles, there’s been much debate in recent times over the relative merits and drawbacks of controlled, predictable, but limiting teaching and learning environments (e.g. Learning Management Systems), coined “ walled gardens ” - versus open, creative environments with rather less individual or proprietary control (e.g. social software), coined “open gardens”. The issue of walled vs open gardens has also been hotly discussed by the mobile device industry, which... Read Full Story
