Thank goodness Andrew Sentance (pictured above) leaves the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in May. On November 10th 2008 this blog’s daily entry was headed “Remembrance and the shame of Celtic Football Club”. It’s sad to have to report that 2 years on, the headline needs repeating. In the UK the Coalition government’s plans for welfare reform have been attacked by Dr Rowan Williams (pictured above), the Archbishop of Canterbury. The head of the Church of England claimed that they could plunge the unemployed into “a downward spiral of uncertainty, even despair”. In a surprise intervention Dr Williams also said that the government’s plans to force some people to work in return for unemployment benefits were unfair and could cause “a great problem”.
