On February 24th, 2010 I was the featured panelist for a UN DPI/NGO Communication Workshop. The title of the presentation was “NGOs Responding to Crisis: Using Social Media in Meeting New Challenges, The Case of Haiti.” My two and a half hour presentation, in front of a variety of NGO representatives, discussed how NGOs can utilize social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and texting to improve their response to international crises. As this presentation occurred only a month after... Read Full Story

Today is International Women’s Day. This week also is host to the annual CEDAW conference (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination) at the United Nations. Additionally, this year’s CEDAW conference represents the 15 year anniversary of the Fourth World Conference in Beijing. More than any other day, today is the day where we all should be discussing women’s rights. When I look back at the powerful speech Hillary Clinton gave at the Fourth World Conference I am amazed by... Read Full Story

On Monday, President Obama and the OMB released the FY 2011 Federal Budget. As we all know, these are rough economic times so I was curious to see how the government’s tightening of their purse strings would effect programs aimed at helping women and families. We know that in Obama’s first year in office there were great strides made towards women’s rights --- the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first bill signed into law once Obama took office and the President created a Council on... Maria Shriver has become a champion of women. Since 2004 she has been presenting the largest one-day conference on women in the nation, aptly called “The Women’s Conference.” Each year her conference brings leaders of every field together to discuss the challenges facing women in the United States and the conference draws over 14,000 attendants. In an effort to extend the benefits of the conference, California’s first lady created a non-profit, non-partisan organization associated with the... Read Full Story

There is so much to catch up on that has happened over the past few months relating to women’s issues...where to begin? Healthcare is a topic I have been following closely and will be writing a post soon about my thoughts. I also ow my reader’s my review of Half the Sky, a book that may have just changed my life. But before I go into all of that I want to share with you about my visit to UNIFEM. I received a letter a few weeks ago from a UNIFEM board member inviting me to attend their... Read Full Story

So I haven’t updated my blog over the past few months and there is a very simple reason: TimeBanksNYC. This brand-new mayoral initiative was launched on Monday and I have been working tirelessly to create this program from the ground up. The basic concept is simple: neighbors helping neighbors. In this program for every hour of service you do for someone in your community you earn one “time credit”, that “time credit” can then be cashed in for an hour of someone in your community providing... Today, at Barnes and Noble looking for a new book to read, I happened upon a new book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn entitled: Half the Sky - Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide . Considering all of the books I have been reading recently have been about gender equality in the United States and Sweden, I thought this would be a great book choice for a look at women’s issues in developing countries. Plus, the book received great reviews. Yet now that I am settled in... Read Full Story

Reposted from the National Women’s Law Center’s blog Womenstake Census data released today for 2008 show that growing numbers of women lost private health care coverage, saw their incomes decline, and fell into poverty, according to an analysis by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). The Census data released today are for 2008 and do not reflect the impact of the decline in real wages, dramatic increase in unemployment, and corresponding loss of employer-sponsored health insurance in 2009... In January of this year, two bills were introduced that called for paid parental leave for federal employees. Similar bills were introduced in the previous congress with the bill passing in the house and never getting a vote in the Senate. I fear we are in for another case of “history repeating itself.” On June 4th the House of Representative passed H.R. 626 at a vote of 258 - 154 and supporters of family-friendly policies were thrilled. Momentum seemed to be growing and the bill was sent to... Read Full Story
